At 18 years old, Elizabeth discovered she was pregnant. She was in college, trying to figure out her future, and motherhood was not part of her plan.
“I thought an abortion was the right thing to do because I was young,” she remembers.
Then Elizabeth saw a poster on her college campus. Members of a local Love Life partnering church were inviting students to a showing of Unplanned. That invitation led her through the doors of the church, where she learned the truth about the life growing inside her and discovered another way forward.
Elizabeth chose life.
“The minute I chose life, I was supported by the church,” she said. “They were the only ones who supported my decision when my family, my friends, everybody else did not.”
The church stood in the gap, supported her, discipled her, and introduced her to Jesus. Within weeks, Elizabeth surrendered her life to Christ. She was baptized and later welcomed her son, Nathaniel.
“I can’t imagine my life without him,” she said.
Elizabeth encountered the Church at the moment she needed truth and support. Today, many students can obtain the abortion pill without ever having that encounter.
The abortion pill now accounts for 65% of all abortions in the United States—nearly two out of every three. California requires abortion pills to be provided through student health centers across the University of California and California State University systems. New York, Massachusetts, and Illinois have also passed laws requiring public colleges and universities to facilitate the distribution of abortion pills to students.
For some students, the abortion now takes place in a dorm room or shared bathroom, far from the support of family, church, or a caring community.
The dorm room is becoming the new abortion center.
That is why we are launching Love Life University.
Love Life University will equip Christian students, unite campus ministries with local churches, conduct prayer and outreach, share the Gospel, and connect pregnant students with practical help and ongoing discipleship.
Work has already begun at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Christian students and local Love Life partnering churches are being engaged, and the foundation is being laid. To officially launch Love Life University at UCSB this September, we need to raise the full $75,000 matching gift.
Imagine another student like Elizabeth meeting a believer before she takes the abortion pill. Imagine her discovering that she is not alone, choosing life for her child, and finding new life in Jesus Christ.
The abortion industry has come to the college campus.
The Church must go there too.
