A Bold Stance For Life In Canada

“You could be arrested for speaking from the pulpit about help for women choosing life rather than abortion?” I asked.

“Yes, it is possible,” Pastor Jeff Thompson replied, “But it doesn’t matter. We will do it anyway.”

Pastor Jeff Thompson is an Assistant Pastor at Riverside Calvary Chapel in Langley, Canada. They were the first Love Life House of Refuge Church in Canada. Mobilizing his congregation to help women prevent or heal from abortion is personal for him. Members of his own family had faced unplanned pregnancies. His wife had chosen life as an unwed, pregnant teen. His future daughter-in-law had chosen abortion. Both came to see how God used their past to help prepare them and Pastor Jeff to stand boldly for the sanctity of life.

It is illegal in Canada to enter a 50-150 meter “bubble zone” around abortion centers even to PRAY for abortion-determined women. Pastor Jeff was ALL IN when he learned how to become a House of Refuge Church to help women in vulnerable pregnancies choose Life. He could not be at the abortion centers, but he could potentially stop the women before they ever went there!

A year ago on Mother’s Day, Pastor Jeff read the Love Life HRC statement to his congregation, promising help to women in unplanned pregnancies as well as healing to women with abortion in their past. Almost immediately, the church was connected with a young mother who was considering abortion. Through the outpouring of love, prayers, and offers of help from his church, the young woman chose life. The kindness of the Lord was on display for this precious young lady through Riverside Calvary Chapel. She discovered she was pregnant with twins, which sealed her decision.

Pastor Jeff visited her just two days before her twins were delivered ten weeks early. He was able to pray with her. Momma and her babies are doing well but they were born very small so they need some necessary medical attention. Please lend your prayers as they grow and get stronger..

“In so many ways, the birth of those twins and our story was God-appointed. This has been the biggest blessing for us. It hits our hearts so strongly. We are so close to this issue. God had prepared us with our own story, and we are just so blessed to be a part of this miracle.”

Pastor Jeff has words of encouragement to other pastors who are on the fence about where they should stand on the abortion issue and whether their church should become a Love Life HRC.

“Whether they know it or not, there are people in every church that abortion is affecting. Women in their 80’s came to me after we became a HRC, telling me they had never spoken of their abortion. It was a deep, dark secret. They came for healing. It’s in every church and nobody is talking about it. We hear other churches say we should not do this…it is too political…WE just preach love at OUR church, they tell me. WHAT is unloving about saving unborn babies, I ask them?”

He pauses, reflecting on the joy of those newborn lives saved from abortion because his church took a stand. He noted that the twins were born at 8:28 and 8:29. In his mind, this was just one more way that God showed how He reigned in every detail.

Romans 8: 28-29: And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Pastor Jeff delights in the many ways God has shown that He has orchestrated every aspect of this blessing.

“I was overjoyed to see a second HRC just popped up in Canada! Right now, America still can minister more openly in front of abortion centers. They must take advantage of the time and freedom they have. It will not last. I just want to encourage other pastors to receive this blessing that we have had…and take a bold stance for life.”
